RUAKITURI SPORTS
HELD IN FINE WEATHER
good horse events
(1 tumid Correspondent.)
Following a wet Christinas morning, the Wakupuiiake ranges and ail the lugn country m the Ruakituri district presented an unpromising appearance on the morning u! mixing Day. VVakapunake laid liis nightcap on most of the day and light showers drifted across towards the west on the journey to the valley, but the anticipations ol the most sanguine people were realised, and the clouds suoii passed away and the sports were held in ideal weather. The ground was a nice flat on the Uuakituri station, sheltered on one side by willows and surrounded hy a circle ol lulls, all carrying a verdancy equal to the spring season. The attendance was below the average owing to the counterattraction at W aikaremoana, the busy season on the stations, and the absence of many of I lie young men on holiday. Several' consistent sports and their horses were missing on this occasion, and the ‘.■gate’’ and the entry lists- suffered in colisequcneo. .Mr. l\. Bates catered tor the public. Mrs. baby, wife of the secretary, commandeered an axeman, and the water boiler was soon going, ihe ground was somewhat rough lor the athletes, but ideal for the (iorse events.
Those responsible for tho carrying out of the sports were: Mr. I’. IW. Mossinan, president; Messrs. W. ! Whyte, D. Graham, Jk Richardson, D. Evans, i. Delaney, A. Reid, and A. Evans, vicepresidents ; Messrs. 1). Evans, chairman, .Noble-Gampbell, E, W, Richardson, 11. Morice, B. Hayden, K. Evans, P. Evans, A. Richardson, I). Douglas, F, Law, C. Shields, and B. Spence, committee; Messrs. D. Evans, 0. Spence, E. VV. Richardson, Jv. Evans, i>. Hayden, T. Law, T. Evans, and it. Goodley (atldctics), stewards. Mr. E. VV. M. Wallis, llangaroa, judged the jumping, and Mr. P. W. Mossmau the ring events. Mr. J. Peebles was starter of the athletic events, and Messrs. M. Glynan and A. Richardson judges. Mr. T. Fahy, secretary, assisted by Mr. A. H. H. Unwin, left nothing undone to promote the. success of the gathering, but once more it must be admitted that the Evans family is the mainstay of the Ruakituri spurts, and no one seems disposed to wrest from them that proud position.
