The presence ol' the Duke of Gloucester made the opening of rhe Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting a gala occasion to-day. 'Fine weather, tempered by a slight breeze, made the conditions ideal and there was the largest .attendance seen at Ellerslie for some years. ‘The Duke drove along the course in front of Ihe stands to a greeting of cheers. The Royal visitor (presented .the cup won by Mr D. M. Douglas, owner of Gold Trail, who scored in the Auckland Gup and congratulated the trainer, J. M. Cameron, and K. Yoitre, who rode the mount. The totalisotor handled £75,074, compared with £69,215 for the corresponding day last year. An inquiry was held regarding the riding of Wiggins and Voitre in the Auckland Cup. Wiggins, Who piloted Solarium, was suspended for a month for interference, and Voitre, who rode the winner, Gold Trail, was suspended for a similar period also for interference.

Ilaut Monde and Galilee lost ground at the jump off, Gay Sheik taking command from Legatee, Penelope and Hunting Scene. Sy me oily came up from fifth to lead aiong.the top, with Galilee next, three lengths back, closely followed by Maut Monde, Gay Sheik, Legatee and Happy Landing. The order was practically the same at the turn, Legatee answering the whip well to overtake the leaders and to clinch the victory comfortably by three lengths from Galilee. ‘ilaut Monde was a neck away, third. Southdown, Grand Jury, Great Star and Kiltowyn were the first away. Passing the stand Solarium took command from Great Star, Southdown, Vintage, Gold Trail* Rocket and Kiltowyn. 'Solarium still led along (the back, with Southdown second to Great Star, Vintage, Rocket, Gold Trail, Kiltowyn and Grand Jury. Solarium petered out in the straight and Gold Trail showed a good turn of speed to win by two lengths from King March. Grand Jury was third, half a length behind. Caliente was fourth. Won by two lengths, and half a length. Time, 3.25.

Gloucester Steeples.—s Absent (Sharkey), 1: 4 Thespis (Burgess), 2; 1 Wee Pat (J. Mcßae), 3. Also ran: 8 Billy Bny, 3 Meteor, 12 Neil*l3 Cotsfielcl, 7 Tabu, 6 Copey, 11 Jayson, 9 Free Air, 14 St. Warrigal. Thespis, who jumped beautifully, took the lead at the water jump from Valpeen. Wee Pat, Cotsfield, Ruby Meteor, and Free Air. Along the back, Thespis was six lengths clear of Jayson, who was followed by Absent, Valpeen, Ruby Meteor and Wee Pat. Thespis and Jayson were on even terms down the incline, but the latter fell at the stone wall. At the straight Callamart also came to grief. Absent, who was then lying third, took the lead and stayed on well to win from Thespis by a neck. Wee Pat was third, and Ruby Meteor fourth. Won by a neck, and half 1 a length. Time, 6.52.

Railway Handicap.—3 Gay Blonde (Tinker), 1; 8 Gay Seton (Horne), 2; 1 Diatomous (R. Reed), 3. Also ran: 13 Sporting Blood, 4 Rereatu, 11 Copyist, 10 Cranford, British Columbia, 7 Star Artist, 15 Sinking Fund, 5 Grand Sport, 12 Imamint, 6 Namakia, 16 Gay some, 14 Mother Superior, 2 Silver Jubilee. The race was. exciting and the issue was always in doubt. Diatomous had the advantage early from Silver Jubilee, Rereatu, Gay Seton and Gay Blonde. The leaders at the turn were Guy Seton, Diatomous, Gay Blonde, Sinking Fund, and Rereatu. In a good finish. Gay Blonde prevailed by a bead over Gay Seton, Diatomous being a similar distance away third. Silver Jubilee was fourth. Won by a bead each way. Time, 1.11 3-5.
