BOOTLEG LIQUOR
MANY DEATHS CAUSED
PORTLAND (Oregon), Dec. 15. Poisoned by drinking a liquid- paint remover, which a bootlegger had sold along the waterfront, scores of bard drinkers were taken to hospitals during the week-end. Twenty-two have died and a dozen others are not Expected to live.
Mr. Hugh Marshall, who died r.t Wallingford, Hawke’s Bay, on Tuesday at the age of 63, was the fifth son ol the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Marshall of Meeaiiee. He was educated at Mecanee and Napier schools and later was engaged in farming in various parts oi \oj-tli Island. He was a member of the Auckland Mounted Rifles, and during the Groat War served in Gallipoli. Egypt, and France, returning to New Zealand in 1918.' From then onwards ho was engaged in contracting in the Poverty Ray district and in other occupations. During the last 10 years he had been in Hawke’s Bay. Among the brothers of the deceased is Mr. E.
