PLUNKET SHIELD PLAY
AUCKLAND’S SECOND
STRIKE
FOUR WICKETS FOR 89
(Per Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, this day
With a lead of 49' on the first- innings, Auckland began their second innings in the Plunket Shield match this morning. They began badly, losing one wicket for three runs, but Whitelaw and Weir batted steadily and £0 was passed at 12 o’clock. Whitelaw faced Roberts and cut- the first ball past mid-off for a single, but the fourth ball of the over knocked Edmonds’ leg stump out. —3—l—2. Weir came in, and was apparently clean bowled by Roberts, hut turned back, and after talking to the umpire, resumed his innings. It is thought that the ball must have rebounded from the wicket keeper’s pads on to the wicket. Weir played stubbornly on the defensive against Roberts, blocking nearly every ball. Scoring was slow, Whitelaw leaving Andrews’ off stump severely alone. At 25, Lester relieved Andrews. Lester kept Whitelaw subdued, and then Andrews came on at the other end. Whitelaw reached 20 by cutting a bumping ball high over the slips to the boundary. Runs came quietly in singles and pairs, Whitelaw glanced Roberts to fine leg for a single, to bring 50 up after 59 minutes. A few overs later, Whitelaw was run out by Page after a good return by Crornb, in attempting a third run from a big offdrive.— 53—21—27-
Vivian joined Weir. Graham had his first turn with the ball at 64, relieving Page at the south end. He sent down a maiden to Vivian. Weir hit Lester dangerously over Graham’s head at mid-off for a three, reaching 30. In driving at Graham, Vivian snicked a ball into the safe hands of Roberts at first slip, and the most dangerous Auckland scoring man was back in the pavilion.—72—3—7. Townsend joined Weir. It. was Roberts’ third catch of the match from three chances. Weir kept going solidly, cutting singles when the occasion offered. Townsend took no risks at the start. Andrews took his first wicket of the day when Townsend, in trying to hook a'short one, had his leg stump rooted right out.— 1 77— 1 4—2. Bush joined Weir, and both batted patiently till lunch.
