A New Screen Star
“ANE Night of Love” introduces a '"new star to the screen in the person of Grace Moore. '.Hitherto Miss Moore has been celebrated as an opera singer. This picture places her amongst the greatest favorites of the screen. Unlike most operatic stars, she photographs charmingly and acts with vivacity and charm. She is splendidly supported by Tullio Carminati and a strong cast.
The story is amusing and intelligent, and Victor Sehcrtzingcr has directed brilliantly. Altogether, according to overseas critics, it is one of the outstanding popular pictures of the year. Incidentally, “One Night, of Love” is interesting as showing the striking progress made iii the art of recording. The latest Western Electric development, called “Shift phase,” is said to mark yet another forward step. By this process the sound is recorded on wax discs over an inch thick, allowing plenty of depth for any possible variations of sound.
The orchestra is recorded first, and the disc is then played while the artist sings—a method which permits of toe accompaniment being toned down to give the voice a chance. The result, is a beautifully clear tone of even intensity.
