MORERE . SCHOOL PICNIC

A delightful time was spent at Morere last week ■at the . Morere" School’s annual picnic,'held on Mr. W. Tait’s property, where the huge, shady old trees’made a "pleasant retreat from the sweltering sun. In the morning running sports, were indulged in by the children,' "and ‘ the school prizes were presented by Mrs. M. Shaw. Lunch was dispensed by the parents, after which the children were assembled at the Hot . Springs 'Hotel .to greet , the Duke of Gloucester, en route to Gisborne. Swimming sports were after-wards'held-in-the river, lan Shaw receiving the prize for the champion diver.

Whilst-afternoon tea was being partaken of, Mr. M. Shaw, chairman of the Morere,. School Committee, made a presentation on behalf of the school children and Morere residents to Miss W. S.purdle, who is leaving to take up teaching duties elsewhere. Mr. Shaw expressed the deep regret, of the whole community' in Miss Spurdle’s departure. Not only was Miss Spurdle a most conscientious and efficient., teacher, hut she was popular with all with : whom., she came in contact, The chairman presented the guest of the nft'erppon "with a silver inlfiid' toilet set, and crystal powder' jio vi'L ra token of goodwill and .respect;Spurdle suitably responded.

As a mark of recognition of the occasion of the Duke of Gloucester’s visit to the Morere Hot Springs Hotel, where he and his staff had lunch, the diningroom' staff each received a present from the Duke.

A strange incident occurred to the Royal entourage at Nuhaka. The Royal car had left for Morere, the rearguard being some distance behind. On reaching Steed’s corner, instead of turning to the left, the car went straight on, the .officer on point duty naturally not questioning the action. The car eventually arrived at No. 3 camp gate, Ropuawhara, where the occupants discovered their mistake, making a hasty retreat for Morere.
