INEFFECTIVE RAID

LONDON, Dec. 20. The News of the World says that 40 prisoners v'orking in a stone yard at Barlinnie gaol, Glasgow, downed tools, dashed to a shed where 150 were working and shouted, “Come on, boys. Now’s your chance.” Short-period prisoners were unmoved, i but about 20 long-term prisoners joined the 40, and all dashed for the store where the tobacco and . cigarettes are kept. Here they were confronted by a solitary warder, who parleyed, pretending that the affair ,was a joke. Eiventuallv he opened the store and handed out a few cigarettes and a quantity of tobacco. Meanwhile, the warders had removed the other prisoners to their cells, and then descended in force upon the raiders, overpowering them. Pandemonium in the cells lasted all night.
