(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. “Despite the serious economic, depression that begin in Australia in 1900, the /year the New Zealand Government decided to amalgamate the Tourist and Pdbncity Department with the Department of Industries and Commerce, and
to reorganise its branches in Australia, H is highly satisfactory to report that there has been a most remarkable advance in the business secured in. Australia by our tourist bureaux in Sydney and Melbourne,” stated the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the. Hon. R.
Masters, in an interview. “Now, whilst there are a larger number of Australians who will some time or other come to New Zealand,” said Mr Masters, ‘‘it must be remembered that so long as shipping fares are higher relatively than say to Tasmania, the proportion of the population who have the time and money to enjoy a holiday in the Dominion will be limited to a comparatively small percentage of the total population. Nevertheless, business is growing, and the present season points to being a record, despite the counterattractions at the Melbourne Centenary celebrations and the Royal celebrations in all the States of Australia.’-
