(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. In brilliant weather, Wellington’s first Plunket Shield engagement of the 1934-35 season commenced on the Basin Reserve this morning. Otago had the first use of the fast wicket, 'Oavaiiagh and Loader opening to .Blundell and Symes. In Ulmnloll’s second over, both batsmen turned him 'successfully to leg, but in at tempting a similar stroke, Cnvanagh cocked up a ball to the slips, giving an easy catch. —0—1—4. Moloney followed, and. double figures appeared in just over even time, and 20 was hoisted in .1(1 minutes. Leader was shaping very soundly, particularly on the log side. After an over by Symes costing nine runs, the scoring rate slackened. During an over by Blundell, a ball bumped awkwardly and the batsman patted a .spot on the pitch. The score at 11.40 a.in. was 20 for one wicket. When Trieklebank relieved Symes, Leader sent his first ball to the log boundary, hoisting 30 for 40 minutes. Ten run's later, Blundell gave wav to Symes, whose fifth ball was snicked by Maloney to slips.—l0 —2—14. Soon afterwards, Trieklebank bowled Leader with a beautiful ball. The first (hour’s play icost Otago three wickets for 40 runs. After 10 runs had been added, Trieklebank skittled Saxton. —50—4 —B. Badcock faced Trieklebank. From a foot outside the crease he squarecut him to the fence, and then later hooked him thrice in succession to the boundary. He fell a victim to a rising ball from Blundell, Which went off his fingers to the slips.—B1 —s—lß.5—18. Scoring quickened during the halfhour before lunch, the century appearing in even time.
