FLOODLIGHT MEETING

THE WEEKLY SPORTS

Ideal weather conditions for an outdoor fixture prevailed last evening when the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club held another successful floodlight track meeting on the Childers road reserve. A good attendance of the public was again registered and mi interesting evening's programme carried through by the club officials. Large fields were seen in * number of the events, notably the hall-mile flat handicap and the '44oyds. Mangapapa Sports Club handicap. The club is to he congratulated on the advent of new runners and the keen interest of the large number of youthful competitors. Some close finishes were witnessed, especially in the 100yds. sprint ey'eitts:- The filial of the 100yds. men’s handicap was a very even race, all the competitors finishing iu a hunch with only inches separating them. An unfortunate mishap occurred during the one mile senior cycle handicap, but happily it was without serious results. Negotiating the western curve, Attwood collided with another cyclist and came down. He escaped injury, but damaged his bicycle. Lively interest was again displayed in the two wrestling bouts. The first contest was between two young competitors, who gave a good account of themselves. No falls were registered, but the 'referee, Mr. T. Smale, awarded a win ou point's to S. Lee, 7st. 81b,, his opponent being A. Kawenga, 7st. 41b. The second match was a demonstration bout staged by J. Boag and R. Wade. Wrestling tactics were displayed in a spectacular manner and the spectators were treated to a particularly fine exhibition, which included numerous thrill and many humorous incidents. The club was indebted to the borough authorities for carrying out a large amount of work, which was necessary to place the grounds in orjdec after having been used for the public reception to the Duke of Gloucester.

Pleasing selections were given bv the W.E.C.M.R. Regimental (City) Band, which played under the baton of Lieut. Wood. The final distances for the MartinAislabie and Johnson Cups were run off. T. Trengroye succeeded in annexing the Johnson Cup, when he filled second place in the 880yds. flat handicap. The points gained by the first three were: T. Trengrove 8, H. Patterson 6, and 11. Kane 5. B. Jackson won the final disance for the Martin-Aislabie Cup, but as there are three athletes, P. Haisman, E. Wyllie and B. Jackson, who have a win each to their credit, it is necessary to run an additional race to decide the holder of the trophy.
