Pasture Conditions
pASTURES in the Gisborne district do not seem to bo as greatly affected by the. drought as those in some parts of Hawke's Bay. Visitors who have travelled through both districts state that parts of Hawke’s Bay are very brown, while others which have benefited by heavy local downpours are showing a touch of green. Generally in Hawke’s Bay, the conditions are the driest for a long time, and grass has totalled disappeared from some of the hills. As a marked contrast, the Manawatu district is showing up green with a fair quantity of feed. In.most parts of the Gisborne district, particularly in the back country, feed is not short yet. The flats are beginning to dry up, but many areas in the back country have received sufficient rain to make the season one of the best on record for those particular areas. Feed is so plentiful on some properties that free grazing is offered for cattle to eat down the roughage.
