COOK COUNTY CONTRACTS

REVIEW 01>: THE WORK

The present summer is the most active the Cook County Council has had in road construction for several years, and many contracts are at present in operation. A review of the 25 contracts let or prepared was given at the meeting of the council this week by the county engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, as follows: — “Waikereru footbridge, Riverside road. —This work has been let to Mr. R._ F. McLeod, who will make a start on it shortly. Supply and delivery of 5600 cubic yards of maintenance gravel to Gisborne and Taruheru ridings.—Tenders are being called shortly. GisborneWairoa, via Hangaroa main highway, construction of reinforced concrete culvert at 19.2 mile. —This work has been lei, to Mr, .IE F. Reynolds, and is now in progress. Gisborne-Wairoa, via Mangapoike Valley road, Manutuko to Rcay Bridge section, reconstruction, two miles. —This contract has been let to Mr. A. H. Monk, and a start has been made. Gisborne-Wajiroa, via Hangaroa main highway, reconstruction and metalling two miles Gentle Annie Hill.-—This contract has been let to Mr. R. M. King, and will commence shortly. “Gisborne-Wairoa, via Hangaroa main highway, top course metalling of G 9 chains from 11.22 mile to 12.08 mile.— This contract has been Jet to Mr. H. E. Monk, and will commence shortly. Construction of reinforced concrete culvert at Quinn’s, 11.4 mile, Waimala Valley road. —Tenders were called for this work, but it is proposed to carry out the work with the bridge gang, as no satisfactory tenders were received. Gisborne-Upotiki, via Motu main highway, reconstruction and metalling of 2.5 miles.—This contract has been let to Messrs. W. S. Gooseman and Company, but it is not anticipated that a start will be made for some time, as metal supplies are not available. ‘‘Gisborne-Wairoa, via Hangaroa main highway, two-coat seal of 80 1 chains. — This contract lias been let lo Messrs. W. S. Gooseman and Company. PatutahiRere main highway, reconstruction and metalling of 30.8 chains of the Ngatapa hill. —This contract lias been let to Messrs. Fitzpatrick and Mclntosh, who will commence shortly. Quarrying and crushing of metal at Patutahi quarry.— This contract has been let to Mr. K. E. Buscke, and is in progress. PatutahiRere main highway, reinforced concrete culvert and approaches, 5.7 mile.—Proposals for this work have not yet been returned from the Main Highways Board. Quarrying and crushing of metal at Gentle Annie quarry. —No tenders were accepted, and the work will be carried out by the county gang. “Gisborne-Wairoa, via Hangaroa main highway, 79 chains top course metalling, 12.08 mile to 12.95 mile.—This contract lias been let to Mr. H. E. Afonk. direction of suspension bridge, Mangataikehu Stream.—Authority lias been received from the Public Works Department, and >t is proposed to call tenders shortly. Supply and delivery of shingle to Taruheru Cemetery.—The contractor, Mr. 11. E. Juson, is making steady progress with this work. Stevens road, Pauikau, 20 chains formation and metalling.—Proposals for this have been approved by tlio Public Works Department, and it is proposed to call for tenders at an early date. Manutuke to Wairoa, via Mangapoike Valley roacl, 7 47 chains top course metalling, 31.63 mile lo 32.23 mile.— Proposals for this work have been approved by Iho Public Works Department. and it is proposed to call fenders at. an. early date,

“Tanrau Valley road, VHi nnlnke, supply and delivery of 1000 cubic yards of gravel.—This contract has been let to Mr. W. F. lies, who has commenced work. Stafford’s road, Pcliiri, 18 chains reforming and metalling.—Proposals lor this work have been approved by the Public Works Department, and it is proposed to call tenders at an early dato. Papain road, Manutuke, 40 chains reforming and gravelling.—Proposals for this work have been approved by the Public: Works Department, and it is proposed to eall tenders at an early dato. Parikanapa road, 18 chains reforming and gravelling.—Proposals for this work have been approved by the Public Works Department, and it is propose?! fo rail tenders at. an early date. Jlepongaere Soldiers’ Settlement road, 27 chains reforming and gravelling.—Proposals for Hi is work have been approved by the Public Works Department, and it is proposed to call tenders at an early date.” The report was adopted.
