GIRLS AND DRINKING
LONDON, Doc. 11
Revelations concerning the large-scale, fashionable gambling parties in the West End of London will be brought, to the attention of the authorities, the Daily Mail states.
The Charity Organisation Society will submit, tho facts to the Crown Law officers and a member will raise the subject in the House of Commons. A member of Ihe committee of the charity for which the Sunderland House party was field says he is horrified by tho goings on and is determined to liavo them cleared up ns early as possible.
The charity officials and promoters are in an awkward position, fearing that proceedings will be taken under the Gaming Acts, which, although modified, apparently srili declare baccarat, banque, roulette and chemin de fer to be unlawful. A guest at the Sunderland House party says he saw £13,C00 on the baccarat. table. Twelve persons, surrounded by crowds, played all night. An inexplicable incident, was that a wellknown guest, who handed over a considerable sum to a man wearing a croupier’s white coat, saw neither man nor money again.
The social editress of the Daily Mail points out that charity organisers are concerned, at the laxity of some of the younger generation at West End halls. They are distressed at the sight of girls of excellent birth and education remaining at (he bar for hours after a champagne supper. One or two shocking occurrences have resulted. It has linen decided, for the future, to ban intemperate persons and their partners.
