“TOO MODEST!”

NEW ZEALAND FAILING

ENGLISH VISITOR’S VIEW 7

(Per Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, this day

“I think New Zealanders are too modest about their country,” said Mr. Malcolm MacDonald, on the conclusion of his tour of the Dominion. “We have had an extraordinarily interesting time and visited the principal tourist resorts in the North and South Islands.”

He said that if these places were nearer Europe, the Dominion would bo a great tourist centre. In any case, there was no reason why there should not be a great development of the country as a tourist resort, as the communicatieis were becoming more rapid all the time.

Mr. MacDonald was reminded that there are two important centenaries to be celebrated in New Zealand in 1940, with others to follow, and he agreed that these would form very valuable opportunities for bringing together leaders in the Empire. He expressed much regret that he could not make his stay in New Zealand considerably longer. He left by aeroplane early in the afternoon for Wellington to join the Rangitane, which sailed at daybreak for London.
