SCHOOL PICNIC

A beautiful spot was chosen on Air H. Davenport’s farm for the Mataiwai School picnic and sports. There was a good attendance of parents, and the children spent a very happy day. The committee, under the leadership of Mr R. Fleming, chairman, spared no efforts for the enjoyment of the pupils. Mr 11. L. Gordon and Miss Wauchop also took an active part in the running off the sports events and games. Luncheon was provided, with a liberal supply of soft drinks and ice, creams to follow.

Air Fleming, after eulogising the work and sportsmanship of Air Jl. L. Gordon, headmaster, called on the senior pupil and holder of the dux medal, Alastor Eric Pedersen, to present on behalf of the pupils a small memento in the form of a tobaccopouch to their departing teacher. Air Gordon suitably responded.

Air Fleming presented every child in the school with a reward in the shape of . a book, and money prizes were given to the .winners of the races. Air Fleming also took the opportunity of congratulating the children who passed the proficiency examination, and presented Erie Pedersen, the 1934 dux of the school, with a gold medal.

HOMEBROOK SCHOOL PICNIC A record attendance of parents and friends forgathered at the Homebrook School picnic on Wednesday afternoon, including visitors from Koranga and MatawaL Everything that could be done for the pleasure of the pupils was carried out by the Homebrook Ladies’ Entertainment Committee, who deserved great credit for their efforts. A programme of sports was run through, and a bountiful luncheon and afternoon tea provided. Each pupil was rewarded with a gift of some sort and at a suitable interval Master Roger Bellerby, on behalf of the parents, presented Miss Lovcll-Smith with a bouquet and a pretty shopping bag, thanking her for the interest she .had shown in the scholars throughout the year. In the evening, the Homebrook woolshed was filled with the crowd that attended from far and uear for the dance. 'lhe music was supplied by Mrs Lett, Miss M. Korte, and Mr Russell. Mr J. McPherson, Te Wcra, left yesterday on a holiday visit to Auckland.—Mr and Mrs F. Sinton and Mr J. 'S. Sinton left on Thursday on a motor trip to Rotorua and Auckland.— Mr A. McTavisk is visiting his parents at Whakatane. —Mr A. J. Gibson, Auckland, is spending part of his vacation with his parents in Matawai. — Hiss 11. Loveli-Smith left Homebrook to-day to visit her relatives in Hastings.—Miss M. Smith, Matawai, is making a prolonged stay in Opotiki.
