GISBORNE CLUB EVENTS FINALISTS DECIDED The finalists wete decided in the Gisborne Rowing 'Club's Executive Fours and Gordon double sculling series last evening, when the semifinal races were rowed over the Taruheru course. In the first of the four-oar races M. Burridge, str., J. Crawford, D. Watt, and R. Dudfield beat B. LeCompte, str., €. McLernon, D. Hucston, and R. Owen. Burridge gained at the start and held a lead of a little over a length on LeCompte for the distance to win by a length, ■with LeCompte coming up. R. Seal, str., L. Scholium, A. Cleaver, and 0. Hall beat H. Hankey, str., C. Davy, D. Wilson, and L. Cowan. Sealy k the lead at the start and held an advantage of one and a-half lengths on Hankey for three-quarters of the course. From that stage on Hankey drew up slowly, but Sealy kept ahead to win by a length. In the semi-finals of the double sculling, J, 'Crawford-Smith and 'D, Patterson, Sso'c., beat R. DeCosta and M. Bright, 6sec. Gradually extending the lead gained in his 2sec. advantage, Crawford-Smith established a handy lead to win by a length of clear water. R. Nicoll and R. Coleman, fisec., beat K. Oarer and D. Dobson, fisee. Nicoll took the lead from the start and won by a length, with Crarer coming up. The finals will be rowed in both series to-morrow evening.

SMITH FOURS SERIES

Two races in the second round of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club’s four-oar series for Mr. ■G. Smith’s trophies, were rowed last evening on the Taruheru River, over a distance of one mile. In the ‘first contest, G. Ardern, str., M. Doyle, J. Green, and! V. Butler defeated J. Young sty., .W. Hanlen, B.

Smythe, and S. Parker. Ardern took command at the start, and led all the way. Young crept up slightly when nearing the finish, but Ardern won comfortably by a length and a-half. Young replaced 11. Twigley as stroke of the beaten crew.

The next race provided a keen tussle, no more than half a length separating the boats over the whole course. The crews were: ,1. Barrett, str., C. Wallace, P. McMahon, and E. O’Neill (bow), and I. Stevens, J. Packman, T. Stevens, and J. Milligan. Barrett established a slight lead at the start, and at Roebuck road had increased this to half a. length. From this point on, however, Stevens hung on well, and the positions of the crews were unchanged at Derby street. Both crews sprinted strongly when nearing the finish, but Barrett maintained his lead, to win by half a length.
