BATTLE WITH GALE

LINER’S ROUGH TRIP MUCH DAMAGE REPORTED SEAMAN DROWNED (Eloc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received December 20, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 19. The Orford arrived at Plymouth only half an hour late after battling with an 80-nrile-an-hour gale in the Bay of Biscay. A seaman was lost overboard. All the furniture was lashed, and the damage was confined tq the kitchens, pantries, storerooms, and barber’s shop. Thousands of pieces of crockery were smashed and the barber’s shop was a mass of wreckage, every movable article being broken. The Orford heeled over to an angle of 30 degrees when entering the English Channel. A tremendous wave struck her, and the two lower decks were awash. Torrents of water poured into the third-class accommodation, flooding tho cabins and forcing the passengers to evacuate, them. The Orford went astern and lifeboats were lowered within four minutes of the cry of "Man overboard.” He was swimming strongly but disappeared suddenly, and the search was abandoned after an hour.
