TASMAN AIR MAILS
SERVICE PROBABLE MACHINE WANTED The recent inauguration of the Eng-land-Australia \m'-mail service |has roused interest in New Zealand, and the possibility of continuing the service across the Tasman has been widely discussed. Such an extension of the service is by no means remote as it was considered recently, and may be an established fact in the near future. A message from Sydney stated that a trans-Tasman service might be established when the mail at present en route from England reached Australia, but inquiries made at Wellington show that the service is not quite so far advanced. The New Zealand Post Office endeavored to arrange an air service to Australia to connect with the first air mail from Australia to England which left Brisbane when the English mail left Croydon, Inquiries were made for a suitable machine for the service, but as nothing suitable was available iu the. Dominion the idea had to be abandoned for the present. A further effort will be made at an early date, however, and the Post Office hopes to establish a regular and reliable service. There is every indication that the service between England and Australia will be increased in frequency and speed at an early date, a Post Office official stated recently, and the proposition of an air service over the Tasman will then be much more attractive.
