EFFORTS APPRECIATED

A PICTURE FOR THE DUKE GISBORNE’S DECORATIONS PRIVATE VISITORS THRILLED “This is an effort that will not be eclipsed anywhere in New Zealand, 1 ’irmly believe. Gisborne has done itself proud in its preparations for greeting tiie Duke of Gloucester, and the town presents a picture which must thrill any traveller, however accustomed he may be to public welcomes and the attendant functions,” said a visitor to Gisborne last evening, discussing the success which has attended the efforts of the 'Townspeople to decorate the business area in anticipation of the Royal visit. This expression of opinion, flattering as it is to the feelings of those who participated in the effort, was echoed by others who came into Gisborne yesterday. It was stated by another visitor from the south that none of the towns between Wellington and Gisborne had made anything like so comprehensive a gesture of welcome to His Royal Highness. ■'There is a lot of hard work behind the picture you have prepared for the Duke, and if it gives him as big a thrill as it gave my party, on entering the town, the committee handling the organisation should be well pleased. Just as a demonstration of Gisborne’s wakeful! ness to an opportunity for doing things of a good scale, the decoration of the town should prove a wonderful advertise ment.”

Last night’s display of illuminations touched off a flood of congratulations from visitors to Gisborne, the festoons of colored lights across the streets and the individual displays of illuminations by various firms in the main business street being commented on most warmly.
