BRAKES AND LIGHTS
IMPORTANCE OF TESTS ROADS DEFINITELY SAFER FI TETHER EX A MIN A TIO N,S ■Sonin illuminating information regarding the percentage of defectiveness revealed in the recent tests of brakes and lights on motor vehicles throughout the Dominion was furnished in a circular letter received by the Borough Council at its meeting last evening from the commissioner of transport, Mr. J. S. Hunter. The commissioner stressed the importance of such tests in the interests of road safety, and requested that local traffic officers should be instructed to carry out tests on the road in all cases in which there was a, doubt as to the effectiveness of brakes or lights. The commissioner stated that although a number of returns were still outstanding, sufficient information was to hand to indicate the conditions prevailing before the tests were commenced. “All the figures,’' he said, “together with the information contained in the reports from the various traffic officers, clearly indicate that the roads arc definitely safer as a result of the check-up, and that the importance of adequate brakes and suitable lights cannot be too strongly stressed. “The tour of the Duke of Gloucester coincides with the additional road traffic usually to be expected during the holiday seas,on, and it is anticipated that as a result all highways will carry an exceptionally heavy volume of traffic. Defective vehicles are at all times a source of danger to other users of the road, but never more so than when the traffic is congested'. It is suggested, therefore, that traffic officers should, as far as is reasonably possible, check brakes and lights in all doubtful cases. It: has been clearly indicated that these two items require constant supervision, and if all. doubtful vehicles were put. through an actual test other drivers will be reminded of their obligations before venturing on the road during the holidays.’’
On iho motion of the Mayor, Mr John Jackson, the .commissioner’s let - tor Avns referred to the traffic inspector with an instruction that he should give effect to the recommendation.
