Dr. G. M. Park, a surgeon from StLouis, United States, who has been visiting New Zealand, visited the Medical School at Dunedin and stated it was in every way comparable with the medical schools of the States. With such education, New Zealand should have surgeons and doctors as good as those of any country. The equipment was good and the personnel highly informed. "Your Plunket system is marvellous,” lie added. "It should be copied all over the world.”
The losses of stock as the result of the recent floods in the Kaikohe district, North Auckland, are gradually being estimated, but on most of the farms, especially the larger ones, the numbers will not be known accurately until the sheep are mustered for dipping, it has been estimated that at least 1000 sheep, some 200 head of cattle, and about 60 dairy cows have been drowned. Beside this miles upon miles of fencing and farm bridges have been washed away, and some farm buildings demolished.
It is not so many years since Rua, the Maori leader, was looked upon as a rebel, defying the King’s authority. To-day his pa is making a unique display of loyalty. The pupils of the Maungapohatu school have determined to see the Duke of Gloucester. It is by no means easy for them to accomplish their ambition, for the school is in the heart cf the TTrewera Country and the children will have to walk 10 or 12 miles before pitting a ride to Te Whaiti, where they will he on the direct road to Rotorua. The teacher in chargie Miss l'auh-.er, tins secured a building in Rotorua to house the young Maoris, and it is possible an appeal will he made to ,the Government to defray transport costs.
