BEACH WATER SUPPLY
SUCCESSFUL WELL WATER FOR POOL FRESH SUPPLY DAILY Difficulty experienced in the past in idling the children's paddling pool at Waikanae Beach has been overcome by the sinking of a. well on the beach property which has proved entirely successful, furnishing an ample supply of water to refill the pool daily. Up to this year it has been the practice to fill the paddling pool by pumping water from the sea, but the pipeline repeatedly became choked with sand, and was a constant source of trouble and expense. During last winter’s storms it was carried away completely, and when the society was faced with the expense of restoring the line this summer, the' chairmah, Mr. A. J. Nicol, resolved to experiment on the property in the hope oi striking a suitable supply of water without having to depend upon the sea. Mr.. Nicol’s expectations of finding water were fully justified, for the first well that was sunk, at the rear of the pumping shed behind the dressing sheds, struck a good supply of fresh water at a depth of 18ft., The digging of this well occupied only one day, and when large-diameter concrete pipes had been inserted to, support the walls, the well was complete. The water is supplied to the paddling pool by utilising tne pumping unit, electrically driven, which was formerly employed to fill the bath from the scaj and the cost of pumping is only a small item. When the water for the paddling pool was drawn from the sea it was possible to pump only according to the tides, but by' utilising the water from the well it is possible to fill the bath at any time. In consequence, fresh water is now being pumped into the pool daily, so that the water never becomes dirty and discolored.
The supply from the well, will also serve another very useful purpose. During periods of drought it is sometimes necessary for the tOwn supply to the showers to be turned off, but by erecting an overhead tank behind the dressing sheds it will be possible for the showprs to be supplied continuously in times w'hen the borough supply is not available. The success of Mr.. Nicol’s experiment is a matter for gratification on the part of the society and of all patrons of the beach.
