ASSAULT AT HOTEL

Leonard Stanley Dunford, a salesman and showman, "charged with assaulting Charles Theodore Chaney, a barman at the Riccavlon Racecourse Hotel, on November 5 last, pleaded not guilty. The evidence for the prosecution alleged that the f.ccused and another man hooked rooms at the hotel in November under fictitious names. Their conduct was such that, Mrs. f/raser, the licensee of the hotel, ordered that they should be put otf ihe premises. Chaney did so. but later the men returned and attacked llini. .Dunford. it was alleged, hit Chaney on the head with a stone. Chancy, questioned by counsel for the accused.' said lie was working on the racecourse at tile time of the murder of Donald !• raser, earning £3 17s a week. When he took the job as barman, he got £4. He denied that he put Dunford cut because he was talking In Mrs. HVascr and witness was jealous. The witness i dded that one of the men said : "There has been one murder here. and there will be another one to-night. The evidence of assault was corroborated bv William Alexander Muir, a relieving barman. Mrs. I'Yaser said she had asked the nun to leave when she was told by the waitress ibat they ''were not good men.". Chaney was employed by her as barman and manage)'.
Dunford was convicted and lined CI Witnesses expenses were not allowed.
