SWIMMING

GISBORNE CLUB Next Wednesday night the Gisborne Surf and Swimming Club will hold its opening carnival of the season, and a splendid programme has been arranged. The carnival will mark the commencement of the celebrations arranged in connection with the visit of the Duke, of Gloucester, and with the influx of country visitors to town a large crowd is expected. With four championship events on the programme, spectators will be able to see the best swimmers of the Bay in action, and already there is much discussion as to the probable winners Of the main events. Since last season a number of juniors have gone, into the intermediate class, and intermediates into senior. In previous years there has usually been an outstanding swimmer in most of the championship events, but this season the result may be in doubt until the finish. At the club night held last Tuesday keen races were witnessed among the big field of competitors, and the times put up showed that some line racing should be expected during the present season. With the fine weather being experienced thero is a mild boom in swimming this season, and members are taking their swimming' seriously, as can be seen by the number training. Besides racing, there will be (living events and a novelty on the programme, and in addition a water polo match.
