POTATO SUPPLIES
VICTORIA’S HEAVY LOSS FLOOD DESTROYS CROPS MELBOURNE, Dec. 6. In view of the embargo on New Zealand potatoes, it is of particular interest to note that nearly £250,000 worth of potatoes were destroyed during the Victorian floods, and now a serious shortage is feared. Between 11,000 and 13,000) acres under potatoes were flooded, representing a loss of from 40,000 to 50,000 tons. The areas affected supplied the bulk of the potatoes used in Melbourno in the first five months of the year. An immediate shortage is also feared, as growers in the Brighton district have been unable to dig their crop.
Prices for potatoes in Melbourne have already risen 30s a ton. It is said that pressure from Victorian potato growers had much to do with the failure of the recent trade negotiations between Australia and New Zealand.
