GISBORNE RECEPTION

TEST BY NEW IYA INTERFERENCE PROBLEM SOME DOUBTS EXPRESSED Test broadcasts from the new IYA station have been heard iiivGisborne. The volume is said to be equal to that of 2ZR Napier and 2ZP Wairoa, but it is problematical whether tits will he sufficient to overcome the noise level.

When the great strength of IYA was announced, Gisborne listeners who have been troubled with a high noise level began to hope that their troubles about daylight reception would be ended. Even the Gisborne Radio Dealers’ Association, which had been battling for extended hours for the local station or some other alternative, temporarily ceased its efforts in this direction in order to see whether the promise of 100 per cent, reception would be fulfilled with the new IYA.

No' definite opinion can be formed until IYA has been in full operation for some time, but a radio dealer to-day expressed doubts as to whether IYA would be all that was expected of it. The Napier and Wairoa stations, 2ZH and 2ZP respectively, .were received with the greatest volume in Gisborne, but even these did not overcome the noise level in a number of localities. Therefore, if the new Auckland station was no better many listeners could'hope for no improvement in daylight reception. On the other hand, there were mafcfr who would benefit from the new 10 k.Vw station in the northern city. For many, Wairoa was the only station which could provide a reasonably loud breakfast session, but an announcement was made this week that after the end of the year 2ZP would discontinue its week-day breakfast session and operate only on Sunday mornings and Tuesday nights. The new IYA will be in operation to fill what would have been an absence of music in many Gisborne homes during the breakfast ,period. Also, for many daylight programmes with a reasonable volume to be supplied throughout the day, whereas 2ZH’s three hours early in the afternoon supply the only available music in some localities after the closing down of the breakfast session from Wairoa

The IYA broadcasts have not been heard by a large percentage of listeners in Gisborne yet, andi the commencement of the regular schedule by the new station on Monday wffi be looked forward to with much interest.
