CRICKET IN GISBORNE
UMPIRES APPOINTED TWO SERIES ARRA NO ED Umpires for the next two series of matches in the senior championship competition were appointed at the fortnightly meeting of the Poverty Bay Cricket Umpires’ Association last evening. The meeting was presided over by by Mr. C. Halliday, and there present also Messrs. A. R. Baker, C®, Lord, T. Sharp, G. Dunn, A. Bignali, G. W. Fyson, W. J. Jennings, H. Lee, A. Hamilton, W. Town, C. Carter, and ( G. V. Lynex, lion, secretary. The appointments for the fourth series of two-day matches, to be played on December 15 and 22, were made os follows: Turanganui v. City, No. 1 wicket, Messrs. Lynex and Baker. Gisborne Club v. Civil Service, No. 3 wicket, Messrs. Dunn and Sharp. Old Boys v.. Marist, No. 3 wicket, Messrs. Lucas and Hamilton.
Whataupoko v. High School, No. 4 wicket, Messrs. Smythe and Carter. Second grade.—Marist v. Unemployed, at the High School, Messrs. Corbett and Charles. The draw for the matches in the following series resulted as under :—Seniors : No. 1 wicket, Messrs. Hamilton and Fyson ; No. 2 wicket, Messrs. Baker i and Carter; No. 3 wicket, Messrs. Lucas land Sharp; No. 4 wicket. Alessrs. Smythe and Dunn. Second grade: Messrs. Corbett and Lynex. The question was raised as the result of a situation created in a recent first grade match as to whether a batsman could retire at any time during any inn* ings. The question was fnllv discussed,' and it was unanimously decided that any baVsman could retire after playing one ball. It was also agreed that should the occasion arise in any future match the captain of the batting side should appeal to the umpires in charge of the game.
