NELSON’S FAREWELL

LORD & LADY BLEDISLOE GLOWING TRIBUTES PAID (Per Press Association.) - NELSON, this day. Lord and Lady Bledisloe were accorded a civic farewell at Nelson yesterday afternoon by a crowded gathering. Glowing tributes were paid by the Mayor, Mr, W. J. Molfatt and Mr. H. Atmore, M-P-During the day, visits were paid to various institutions. His Excellency said that as an old friend of Lord .Rutherford he had been particularly interested in Rutherford House at Nelson College. The impression he had gained as he had walked through that delightful edifice was how very different were the conditions from those Lord Rutherford must have experienced many years ago when he was a pupil of Nelson College. •‘I shall tell him all about it when 1 return,” said Lord Bledisloe. Speaking at the civic farewell, Lord Bledisloe* said he had often wondered why there was no portrait of Lord Rutherford in New Zealand by an eminent British artist. He was going to let them into a secret. It might interest his hearers to know that ho anticipated that before he left for England he would see such a portrait executed by a British artist hung in the National Art Gallery at Wellington. Possibly Nelson College might secure a replica. He looked. upon Nelson as a centre of science, art, and education, richly endowed with floral beauty, which had been to them while in New Zealand a happy resort for rest and recreation. He looked upon the Cawthron Institute' of • Scientific Research as one of the most enlightened enterprises ever established. He appealed to Nelsonians to preserve the beauty of their lovely territory from the vandals of commercialism. Lord and Lady Bledisloe returned to Wellington this evening.
