GISBORNE CLUB SEMI-FINALS DECIDED The semi-finals in the Gisborne blowing) Club's Second Trial Fours series, rowed over the mile course on the Taruheru River, were contested last evening. Both races were decided comfortably and lacked the excitement of previous contests in this series, although many spectators were, at the various vantage points, expecting close finishes. Rowing upstream in the first semifinal, .P.?Gav,in, str., S. Bruce, R. Kinder, and W. Waite beat A. F. Allen, str., F. Aitdhison,' I). Watt, and R. Diidfield. Gavin went to the front early and at Derby street had a lead of a length on Allen, which he extended to a clear water advantage, and with a steady swing held his oponent off to win comfortably. In the next race, rowed down the river, T. MeCallnrn. str.. P. Weir. G. Hall, and E. Dow boat .1, Gemmell, str., C. McLcrpon,. R. Coleman, and P. Barry. McCallurn took the lead from the start to have a little over a length’s lead at Roebuck road bridge. He added to his advantage in the next quarter of a mile and pave Gemmell no opportunity to overhaul him. The final iti this series will be rowed this evening.

MILLER INTER-CLUB OUP NEXT MONTH’S FIXTURE Members of both the Poverty Bay ana Gisborne rowing clubs are now looking forward to the series of contests which will comprise the annual series for the Miller lnter-club Cup, a trophy donated by the W. Barrington Miller Trust for competition on terms to be settled between the executives of the respective clubs.

The trophy is now regarded as almost as important as the regatta trophies rowed for annually by the clubs 01 the .asc Coast association's district. The system of competition devised is calculated to give opportunities for repres°ntamo racing to all grades of oarsmen .a both clubs, the crews which meet in the races being the semi-finalists and finalists in the respective Presidents’ Pours series. Both clubs now have crews in Gaining for the presidents’ events, and late in this month the elimination rounds ot both series will be rowed. When the host four crews in each club have been sorted ont, in the ordinary course of competition, the inter-club series will comment c, the first beaten semi-finalists in the Poverty Bay club meeting the first Men semi-finalists in the Gisborne club, and the inter-dub series following tlje progress, of the Presidents’ Fours contests stage by stage, until the winning ifinatists in both clubs meet. To date the Poverty Bay eltib has had the advantage in the annual competitions for the Miller lnter-club Chip, but last year the Gisborne crews carried off the trophy, and the friendly rivalry this year is likely to reach a higher pitch than in any previous season.
