WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETS (Herald Correspondent.) Tlte November meeting of the Matawai Women’s Institute was held in the public hall on Thursday. Mrs. Thomas presided over a smaller attendance than usual. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Fleming, Burgess, Calcott and Scholium. Tho meeting opened with the institute song, followed by a lengthy list of business. Another Scottish link letter was read by the link secretary, and it. was agreed to send Christmas greetings from the institute, accompanied by a small token, one to Scotland and one to England. Mr. O. V. Smith gave a very interesting demonstration of Singercraft, showing how the patterns are, formed, and explaining carefully how to use the implement. All the members enjoyed the demonstration very much, and a hearty vote of thanks was given at the conclusion.

Mesdamcs Fielder and Gibson acted as hostesses, afternoon tea time being used in further discussing final arrangements for a Paddy’s Market on December 1, for which members are enthusiastically working, and which promises to be a record success.

In the competition, best coat-hanger, Mesdamcs C. G. Fielder, and C. V. Smith, tied for first place. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

Mrs. W. It, Clark returned home last week, after a long absence, recuperating in Gisborne from her illness. At the monthly meeting of the Matawai School Committee, it was arranged to give the children the usual breakingup treat, in the form of a picnic. Judging by the crowd which took advantage of 'Mr. R. .7. Kerridge’s arrangements for the hill-country folk to attend the Regent Theatre in’Gisborne oti Tuesday evening, most- of the passengers enjoyed the outing. The return journey rather spoiled the effect as tbe train took longer to Go the trip than usual.

The Matawai school children celebrated Guy Fawkes Day in the usual hilarious manner. A huge bonfire, accompanied bv fireworks, was the centre of attraction, the display taking place on a hill overlooking the village and adjacent to the school.

On Friday and Monday evenings an enterprising group ol showmen enlivened the. township with a merry-go-round and other side-shows and their accompanying music. The weather, however. proving inhospitable, somewhat lessened the number of visitors to the camp.
