THE LETTER “X”
MAY PICK A MURDERER
NEW YORK, Oct, 27
The fate of Bernard Hauptmann, who is lighting extradition* from New Jersey to New York on a charge of murdering the Lindbergh baby, may rest finally on tho manner in which ho writes the letter “x” in the word ‘ ‘ Bronx. ’ ’
Hauptmann denied the charge of murder, and submitted an alibi to show that on Tuesday nights he invariably courted the girl whom later ho married. It was on a Tuesday that the kidnapping occurred. The police started in earnest on the presentation of their case. Much will hinge on the handwriting evidence. Albert Osborn, a leading expert, says ho is certain that Hauptmann wrote the word “Bronx” in the note left in the baby’s cradle.
