The October rainfall was the smallest for many years, only 16 points being recorded by Air. Mackay at Te Putaputa, four points on October 2 and 12 points on October 30. It lias been the driest month in Wairoa since March, 1021, when only 10 points were registered.

The local bodies are to meet next week, the Power Board on Monday at 10.30 a.m., the Harbor Board at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the Hospital Board on Tuesday afternoon, and the County Council on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

An important meeting of the Wairoa A. and P. Society is to be bold the week after next (o deal with a matter of finance. All members are circularised to attend and it depends on their attendance. coupled with their usual business acumen, whether or not the society will be able to put in hand the much-needed improvements on the grounds. At the monthly meeting of the Clyde bank branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, held at the residence of Mr. A. B. Taylor, Mrs. H. L. Taylor presided. 'The senior .race for homing., pigeons.,promoted by the Wairoa club, took place on Saturday from Parnassus, there, being 14 starters. Results:—G. Zakris, 1 and 3; J. Lindsay, 2. The competition carried out by the Redwing Basketball Club resulted in a win for Miss Al. Bell. The Trial Fours, a half-mile event, conducted by the Wairoa Boating Club, resulted in some very close finishes, the final being won l>v K. Hall’s crew by a canvas from ,1. Chicken. The winning crew comprised: J. lrisull (str.), K. Hall. H. Trevvby, and B. Groves, with V. Fraser (cox). There are to he several more Trial Fours during the. season. The fishing season opened in the Waikurrmoana district on November 1, but there are no reports of any catches as vet. Fish are said to be plentiful in the lake and the Waikaretahoke River. The same may be said of Waikare-iti, and apparently anglers are in for a good time as the fish are in fine condition.
