(Received Nov. 5, 11 a.m.)
MELBOURNE, Nov. 3. The Duke of Gloucester recovered sufficiently to enable him to visit' Geelong, where he was welcomed by 50,000 people. He returned to Melbourne in time to attend the Henley regatta.
His Royal Highness, who was determined to avoid further disappointment for the people, said that nothing but a deluge would keep him away. The day, however, was brilliantly fine, the Henley pageant being brighter than ever before. With the Royal Ensign fluttering picturesquely astern, the Duke’s launch followed one race at top.
More than 100,000 people lined the Yarra banks. The gay and festive cr.owd sauntered about the lawns and the centenary spirit held full sway. Decorated canoes, launches and houseboats adorned the river. Visitors declared that the spectacle was the brightest yet seen. Dancing was held on the lawns in the evening amid trees festooned with colored lights, and fireworks soared into the sky. In the Challenge €up contest, London defeated Wanganui in the final by three lengths. In the semi-final, Wanganui defeated Mercantile by onethird of a length.
