NEW ZEALAND FIREWORKS
GUY FAWKES CELEBRATION WAIKANAE BEACH DISPLAY The usual display of fireworks should be seen in Gisborne to-night, providing there is not too much rain to prevent the young folk going out of doors. For the first time New Zealand hoys and girls will be celebrating Guy Fawkes night with New Zealand-made fireworks. Chinese fireworks had almost a monopoly of the market until a few years ago, when they were superseded to a great extent by British. Now, New Zealand and England have supplied practically all demands for fanev fireworks, although China still supplies most of the crackers. A good trade has been done by Gisborne shops this year, and New Zealandmade fireworks have proved a ready selling hue. Some shops have stocked as much of the New Zealand product as they have of the imported, and it is believed 1 that the Dominion manufacturer might capture the entire market next year. x . As usual there will be a brilliant display of fireworks on the Waikapae Beach to-night. Several large heaps of rubbish have been assembled by the children of . Victoria Township, and there is sure to be brilliant illumination to-night. One of the biggest of the heaps has a huge effigy of Guy Fawkes ready for burning. It is expected that a large crowd of both adults and children will he present, if the weather is fine.
The call or “A penny for the guy” lias been more frequent in Gisborne this year. In the past such a way on the part, of boys of raising money for November 5 was not exploited nearly so much as in other places. Recently,! however, a number of “guys” have been stationed at popular corners, and boys with a little bit of showmanship have been fairly successful in providing for their November 5 amusement.
