A narrow escape from drowning was experienced at Wliakatane by Miss Mary Bridger, 18, when she walked out on a springboard on the wharf to observe a scliool of kawhai in the river. Without warning the springboard tilted, the lastenings' having become loose,, and Miss Bridger fell into the river,. which .is very| deep at this point.
