BOWLS AND CROQUET (Herald Correspondent.) Although Saturday morning’s rain militated against a large attendance of memand friends at the afternoon ceremonies of opening flic Pntutahi Bowling Club’s green and the new croquet'green, the enthusiasm of those who did attend was in no way damped. in opening the bowling green, the president of the club, Mr. D. S. Williams, welcomed the visitors and referred to invaluable services rendered by Mr. and Mrs. L. Allan. During the past winter an effort had been made to rawfunds by various means, and as a rpflkJ improvements had been effected to green and its surroundings. He called upon Mrs. J. B. Clark to roll up the first bowl, after which the green was declared open for play. The following are the results of the play : —White, Monteith, Cusack and Williams (s) 23 v. Bain, Gatehouse, Allan, and ITolt (s) 16: Clark, Hogan, Campbell and East (s) 17 v. J. Atkins, Brooker, Peel and McCaveston (sj 20. The new croquet lawn, which is ideally situated in the south-east corner of the Domain, was laid down last autumn by the Patutahi Domain Board. In spite of the dry winter, an excellent strike of grass was secured and the green compares favorably with- any in the district. In opening the green, Mr. J. B. Clark referred to the help received from the Domain Board which had rendered invaluable service to the club and indeed to all sports bodies using the Domain. The president, Mrs. Clark, Jut off the first hall, after which several competitions were keenly'-contested. The results were as follow: —Clock croquet: Mrs. Derbyshire. Hurry scurry: Mrs. C. Cusack. Hitting the peg: Mrs. C. Peach. Bull's-eye : Mrs. McKee.
A delightful respite was afforded when a sumptuous afternoon tea was dispensed in the hall, the bowlers being the guests of the members of the croquet club. The tables were artistically adorned with Iceland poppies, cornflower, and leuchera. Mrs. Clark welcomed the visitors, and Mrs. Derbyshire suitably responded. The following were amongst those present;—Mesdames Somerville, Derbyshire, Wilson, Bayliss, Wood, A. Wilson. Cusack, Peach,- R. Eade, W. Bryson. J. Atkins, J. B. Clark, L. Allan, McKee, Hughes, Ancell, Ashworth, McDermott, and Miss Brooker.
