AERODROME DISPUTE

! , (To tho Editor of the Herald.) ■ ‘Sir,—Your leading article of tho 13th dealing with the aerodromo dispute still leaves many points obscure to the public in general. The Borough Council and unemployed organisations were fully acquainted with all facts surrounding the dispute, both bodies being in possession of cori respondence from the Unemployment 'Board outlining its own attitude and the responsibility of the local bodies to the scheme.

Now, Mr Editor, despite all controversy to the contrary, what sane individual can honestly claim the development of air services is not of national importance, or that it would •be non-essentjal to this district. That the unemployed might have gained a small concession by undertaking the work is of little importance. Tho question from their point of view is that all work of benefi to the community should be paid format full time standard rates and not to be carried out under the Unemployment Board’s relief schemes, and we feel sure the public as a whole support this view. But unfortunately our City Fathers think otherwise, and while professing sympathy have not been sparing in their efforts to get as much, work as possible performed at the expense of Unemployment Board funds. While it must bo admitted you covered the whole of the position fairly and thoroughly, at the same time you to create a psychology of sympathy towards the local bodies in their future attempts to obtain the services of the unemployed for the completion of the aerodrome scheme at little or no expense to themselves. The unemployed claim a loan should 'be floated to carry out this work, and have little fear that tho ploughs and scoops referred to can compete against the ridiculous prico offered them, and refer you to the improvements now being carried out at Tarttheru cemetery by tendered 'contract. In conclusion, we feel that all sound-thinking persons will applaud us in our attempt to get back to permanent employment and will support us in opposing all work that is forced upon us to be performed under relief schemes, that is for the advancement and direct benefit to the community.—Yours,- etc., C. GOODSON, Viee-rresidcnt Unemployed Workers’ Movement.
