, MATCH PLAY STARTED (Elec. Tel, Copyright—United Tress Assn.) SYDNEY, Oct. 15. Fine conditions prevailed for the commencement of the match play stages in the Australian amateur and professional golf championships at Hose Bay. Sixteen amateurs who had qualified for the open championship on Saturday figured in 36-hole match play. Following are the results: — Amateur championship.—First round : P. Hughes defeated G. Thompson, 5 and 4; A. Waterman defeated’J. Allcrton, 2 up; M. Ryan (Victoria) defeated P. Ellis. 6 and 5; T. McKay defeated 11. Williams (Victoria), 2 and 1: K. Apperlev defeated G. Armstrong, 3 and 2; J. Ferrier defeated L. Nettlefold (Tasmania), 3 and 2; R. Bottington defeated D. Esplin, 4 and 3; 11. Hattersley defeated 0. Mcares, 4 and 3. Professional championship. First round: D. Soutar defeated C. Brawn (Queensland), at the 37th; J. Petlerson defeated J. Cohen, 4 and 3: M. Kelly defeated E. Bolger, 2 and 1; V. Richardson defeated T. Burke, 2 and 1; G. Gray defeated T. Heard, 4 and 2; XV. Bolger (open champion) defeated N. Von Nida (Queensland), 1 up; E. Niifsmitli (Victoria) defeated F. Eyre, 6'and 5; W. Corrv defeated D. Spence, 2 and 1. D. Soutar, tlie 52-year-okl golf veteran, went out in 30, which is five under par, and came home in 41.
LOUISVILLE TOURNEY HORTON SMITH’S WIN NEW YORK, Oct. 15. After leading during the first two rounds, Crilig-Wood faltered in the two final rounds to-day and was placed second in the Louisville (Kentucky) open golf tourney, in which all the members of the centenary professional team participated. Horton Smith won with 286 for 72 holes. Wood scored 289. Shiite, 934. Buffoon and Runyan 298 each, ' alie! Diegel and Cooper 300 each.
