DIED AT SEA

MR. E; V. RIDJDJFORD PASTOR ALIST & SPORTSMAN (Per Press, Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Private advico was received in Wellington last night of the death at sea yesterday morning of Mr. Edward Vivian Riddiford, of Glcnburn and Tablelands. Mr. Riddiford, who was aged oo years, was returning from a trip to England in the Rangitiki, which is due at Auckland on October. 24, and was accompanied by liis wife and daughter Pamela.

One of the Dominion's best known and most successful pastoralists, Mr. Riddiford, whose home was ’Woburn, Lower llntt, was equally prominent, in. racing circles. He was a mo mb or of a family whose, turf associationsare part of the, history of the sport in this country. He with his brother Erie, won a large number of the principal handicap Tacos in New Zen* land, including the New Zealand Cup, the Auckland Cup, and the Grand National. On his. own account,. Mr. Riddiford was the holder of the Wellington Cup, the Mitchdison Cup, and other coveted trophies. Mr. Riddiford was educated 1 at Wanganui Collegiate School and began bis career of a sheepfurrner as a cadet, at Tcawaiti, the Wairnrapa property of his father, Mr. E. V. .Riddiford. He later managed his lather’s properties at Longburn and Cheltenham, and, upon the latter's death in 1011, took over the Glenburn sheep and cattle run on tho East Coast tablelands, the Romney Marsh sheep stud in the Wairarupa, and Brentwood, the noted Trnhtham racing stud. The late Mr. Riddiford married Miss Zee Thorne George,.third daughter of the lion. Sevntour Thorne George, of Auckland, 'Their two daughters are Mrs. J. Vogel, Lower Hutt, and Miss Pamela Riddiford.
