TN “River Crossing,” his fourth novel, Mr. William Hatfield' displays an intimate personal knowledge of some phases of bush life in Australia. The plot of “RiVer Crossing” is conventional.

On the day that Eliee Eenehurch arrived at Flint River Downs, a cattle station in Western Queensland, to 'settle down with her young husband who had worked his way up to manager of the southern part ot' the station, her husband quarrelled with Hurlstonc, under whom he was working, and threw up his job. Instead of looking for a job on another station, Fen (as the young husband is called by everybody) begins to earn his living in the locality as a kangaroo shooter under the tutelage ,of an old bushman, Mick Doolan. This gives (ho author the opportunity of imparting some interesting information about kangaroo shooting. .Some of the bush scenes and bush types he introduces are excellently presented because of their fidelity to life.
