COMMUNIST UPRISING
FEARS IN AMERICA PRECAUTIONARY ACTION PROVIDENCE', Sept. 15. The Governor, Mr, Green, informed an extraordinary session of the State Legislature summoned to deal with an emergency in connection with the industrial troubles, that Rhode Island was faced, not with a textile strike, but with a ‘‘Communist uprising.” He asked for authority to call Federal troops into tlie State, and for the appropriation of £40,C00 with which to enrol lOCO World War veterans as special State policemen. Mr. Roosevelt had a telephonic conversion with Mr. Green to-day, and the situation was outlined to the President, who thereafter said he stood ready to order Federal troops to intervene at a moment’s notice.
Rioting throughout last night had been general in several towns besides Saylesville, Woonsocket being particularly' affected. One person was killed and several wounded. Shops were smashed and looted and other property destroyed. Mr. Green this morning issued a general order to the police forces in tlie State to arrest and hold for examination every known Communist for possible con. neetion with riots throughout the State.
