MEMORANDA
The membership of the Gisborne Choral Society, under the cunductorship of Mr. Wilfrid Kohn, lias now increased to 70 voices, and any intending members are requested to be present at "next Monday’ rehearsal, in order to tain part in the society's concert to he held in October. The St. Andrew’s Women’s Guild is holding its annual sale of work in the City Hall next Friday morning and afternoon. Those in charge of the various needlework and novelty stalls have been busy all I lie winter months in preparation so the stalls will be amply -stocked with many attractive and useful articles. In addition there will be produce, delicatessen, sweet, cake, and llower stalls. Lunch and afternoon tea will be served. An attraction will be the display of ■spring blooms. the present leader of the Federal Opposition, and supporters of Air J. Lang, a former New South Wales Premier, whose Government was defeated because of its attempts to evade interest contracts and exercise a species of Socialist dictatorship. The dividing line between Scullin’s ’policy and Lang’s policy in regard to socialisation is indefinte. Some of Mr Scullin’s supporters re-echo the more extreme, socialisation sentiments of Mr Beasley, leader of the Federal Lang Party. The Lang section received no encouragement from five oi the six .States and is confining its nominations and campaign to New South Wales. ft. is thought that in the extremely improbable event of Labor gaining a majority—it requires to increase its present representation in the Lower House from 19 to 38 in order to do so and also to win 16 of the 18 vacant seats in the Senate —the two sections will combine on a compromise fixing the rate at which socialisation will proceed. THE NOMINATIONS The nominations number 262 for the House of Representatives, as compared with 233 in 1931, and 67 for the Senate. The candidates are classified thus:— Representatives.—Federal Labor, 71; United Australia Party (Ministerial), 61; Country Party, 27; Douglas Credit. 34; Communist, 20; Lang Labor, 28; Independents and others, 21; total, 262. Senate.—U.A.P. (Ministerial, including Country Party’s one of three nominations), 21; Federal Labor, 18; Lang Labor, 3; Douglas Credit. 9; ungrouped, 16; total 67.
