NAPIER ROAD FORD
TO BE ELIMINATED BY CULVERT The remaining open ford crossing on the Tangoio Hill, on the Napier-\\ niroa road, is shortly to be eliminated. 'Die Public Works 'Department has decided to construct a 9ft. culvert over the Tararere Stream at the bottom of the Devil’s Elbow. The culvert will be | about live chains from the crossing and instead of a hairpin corner having to be negotiated a bend having quite a wide radius will be provided. Owing to the depth in the gorge at the site selected for the culvert, substantial earth fillings for approaches will be required. The Hawke s Bay County Council has agreed to contribute ouotliird of the cost up to £560. I 1 he Tararere Stream in time of wet weather has been the means of motorists having to be stranded on the Tangoio Hill when the stream above the Tangoio falls was also an open crossing. The new work, which has been designed by the engineers of the Public Works Department at Napier, will provide an all-weather road to Wairoa except in the case of slips.
