London Fashions Supreme. New York is “Thrilled”
I ONDON, as a fashion centre, lias *"* so o rod another point. This time the tributes conic from New York. For several weeks fashion editors there have been eulogising London as “the thrilling town for buyers ot clot he's. ” This is a triumph for an industry which is fast gaining for itself a gold mine reputation. The day is not long past when American visitors complained that the clothes in English shops had no lino at all. 'The latest “bouquet” says:— “England has become the source of original chic that does not stop with tweeds and ghillics. American buyois arriving at the peak of the season find much at Ascot, the Courts, and among the dccollotce women of the theatre andienes worth bringing home. They are rediscovering the West-end as an exciting fashion centre. ” Several Berlin houses, and half-a-dozen Parisian eou't uric re’s have have found they had to establish branches here if they wanted “to be in on” all the advanced fashions, American designers have fallen into line. New York records - the fact that they are making elothesi in London of “peerless hand-woven fabrics, and are employing that famous English tailoring tliat can be worn with an air.” . „ Special compliments are paid Miglish materials:— “Linens and cottons are distinctive in weave and coloring—English dyers are expert, and their new velveteens for the fall are a delight. America is amazed at want has happened to English conservatism. ‘ 1 Why, ’ ’ says New York, “ their linen beach costumes and sun-bathing costumes'have no backs at all!”
