GISEORNE FARES WELL VOTES INCREASED BY HALE GRANTS MORE GENEROUS (Parliamentary Reporter.) . -WELLINGTON, this day. Gisborne has fared well in the distribution of' public works funds, according to the announcements made in the House ,of Representatives last evening by the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon J. G. Coates, in presenting the estimates for the current year. The total amount to be expended from these funds ,on roads and bridges throughout the Dominion is £670,000, as against £660,000 voted last year for the same purposes; and while the distribution' has been on more generous terms most parts of the Dominion, tho Gisborne road district has secured a 50 per cent, increase in tho amount pf public money voted through this medium, comparing tho totals for this year wit.fi. those for 1933*34. Actually, the Treasury will be asked to furnish £500,000 for the expenditure contemplated this year from tho public, works account, there being credits brought forward from last year to the sum of £170,000. Last year the amount asked for from tho Treasury was £455,000, s,o that the total additional expenditure for the new year, measured in terms of new votes, is £45,000, or 10 per cent, greater, than last year’s. The votes accorded to the Gisborne road district last year totalled £22,732, of which unfortunately only £7430 was exponded, owing largely to the difficulty found by public bodies ir. making their contributions available. This year the Minister is propared to make £33,433 available for this road district, and there is also substantial expenditure contemplated on roads fringing on the Gisborne road district, and from the improvement of which some benefit will la derived by Gisborne people.
