(Herald Correspondent.) One of the leading farmers of the Wairoa district a week ago told the Herald’s representative that in view of a possible drought next summer, following dry periods in Britain and the United States of America, the East Coast of the Dominion ha<l not then recorded a sufficient- soaking to hold the pastures in a dry season. To-day that issue seems to have been settled, for this part of the Fast Coast has now had a thorough soaking, without any of the accompanying disadvantages such as floods. The total fall for tiie 48 hours ended 9 a.m. on Friday was 2.99 in., as recorded by .Mr C.’ Maekay at “Putaputa,” Oliinepaka. The total for the seven- months ended July 3 was 31.4 in., well over the usual average. Mrs White, wife of Mr Allan While. North Clyde, a former resident of Havelock North, and who not long ago joined her husband here, passed away at the Wairoa Hospital on Tuesday after a short illness. The deceased had been ill in Havelock North, and after coming to Wairoa had to undergo an operation, which resulted satisfactorily, but she failed to rally afterwards, and passed away to the great grief of her husband and 'family, to whom a large measure of sympathy is being accorded. She leaves, besides her husband, seven daughters—Mrs F. Lay, Mrs S. Lay, Miss May White, all of Hastings; Miss Lily White, Dannevirke; Misses Iris, Daphne, and Heather White, Wairoa—and one son, Ronald, Wairoa. The funeral took place on Friday atternoon at the Wairoa cemetery, in the presence of a large number of residents, Mr A. (1. Medley conducting the service at the house and at the graveside. The pallhen rs-were Messrs R. White, F. and S. Lay, A. Lindsay, J. W. Sproule, and Wi Paul. A large number of floral tributes were sent as tokens of esteem and sympathy for the bereaved.

Mr F. J. Cover, Stratford, has been appointed to supplement the staff of the Wairoa branch of the Bank of New South Wales, and is to take up his duties at an early date. —ftjrs D. Glengarry, who arrived back on Tuesday, leaving her husband in Auckland under treatment, was calle.d back again and left for Auckland on Thursday, it being found necessary to perform an early operation on her husband. His friends in Wairoa are all hoping this may bring about a. satisfactory issue to his longstandiijg trouble.—Messrs Triggs and Elphick, Hastings, visited Wairoa on Friday.
