EARLY ANNOUNCEMENT

BRITISH MEAT QUOTA NEW ZEALAND’S PROTEST LONDON PRESS COMMENT (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) ■LONDON, Aug. 1. The Morning Post says it is expected that, the meat agreement announcement will be made shortly providing for a reduction of the Dominions’ exports to the level of the, standard of the Ottawa year, 1931-32, plus 5 'per cent. Mr. J. H. Thomas, says the Post, wanted to allot definite quotas on frozen and chilled beef,' but Mr. S. M. Bruce opposed them, claiming that the Dominions were entitled to decide their own apportionment, especially because chilled beef promises to replace a considerable quantity of frozen. Mr. Thomas agreed, subject to the combined chilled and frozen beef quantities not exceeding the agreed shipping schedules during a definite . period. The Suit News Service is informed that the quotas will practically not affect- Australia’s immediate exports. The presentagreements are merely temporary, and designed to maintain prices pending the formulation of a long-term policy. The-Daily Telegraph’s .agricultural editor says that some of, the most difficult details of the scheme of administering the £3,000,000 beef .subsidy have been worked out and there is every prospect that distribution of the money is possible by September 1. The chief danger of delay is the manufacture of tattooing implements, as -each animal entitled to a subsidy is tattooed on the ear to ensure that it does not come for the subsidy a second time. There will be no attempt to grade cattle, as all fat: stock are eligible for the subsidy. Certificates for the subsidy will be issued at 700 live stock centres jointly by ,an auctioneer, a farmer, and a butcher. There is every prospect of prices rising. The Financial News says: “Though Australia and New Zealand have not yet definitely replied to the latest British meat proposals, the .indications are that Australia will accept and New Zealand will refuse. It is assumed that Britain made separate proposals to Argentina. It is understood that Argentina will certainly refuse if New Zealand does, and will probably refuse, anyhow.”
