MATAKAOA W.I.
MONTHLY MEETING Members of the Matakaoa Women’s Institute attended the July meeting in fairly large numbers, despite tire fact chat the weather was most uupropitious. The vice-president took the chair in the absence of the president, and on her motion a vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Gordon Barbara, the members standing in silence.
The Canadian ode was sung, and the reading of the creed followed. There was a good response to the roll-call, “What 1 like mdst at the institute meetings.’’ Everyone enjoyed the community singing, and some good old songs in which, all could join were “Annie Laurie,” “Kathleen Mavoumeen,” “Sylvia,” and “Silver .Threads Among the Gold.” "The competition for articles made out of old felt hats was won by Mrs. Boyd, witli a tea eosy, while Mrs. Walford was second with a pair of slippers, and Miss Hitchcock third with a handbag. The second competition, for Scotch shortbread, was won by Mrs. Cowan, with Mi’s. Walford second, and Mrs. Tyrell h.c. The hostesses, Mesdames Strawbridge. Nordberg, Tyrell, Walford, and Halliwell, served a delicious afternoon tea. A discussion on what work to do in die flower and vegetable gardens during August was started by Mrs. Rudlaud and carried on by other-garden enthusiasts.
Mrs. Askew lias very kindly put tin use of the commercial room of the Kawnknwa Hotel at the disposal of the institute so that the meetings will be carried on as before.
The singing of the National Anthem brought tlie gathering to' a close.
