INCREASE IN RELIEF HIGHER TAX INVOLVED (Parliatnontary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Declaring that it was aa easy matter to pass resolutions in favor of increased benefits, the Minister of Employment, the Hon. A. Hamilton, in a written answer to a question asked by Mr. It. Semple (Labor, Wellington East), stated in the House that an important factor should not be ignored, as to how the extra money to provide the increased unemployment -benefits could be obtained.
The question drew attention to a manifesto drawn up by the Auckland Council of Christian Congregations against the present standard of unemployment relief, particularly that on sustenance, and asked tlio Minister at onco to take the necessary steps to increase the allocation for relief throughout the country. The Minister said that; increased benefits could not be restricted to Auckland, and the only way to meet the desire of the council would be by increased taxation, which the Government was not prepared to impose.
