RUGBY MANAGEMENT

P.B. UNION AFFAIRS NO BIG GAME FOR JUNE 4 COMPETITION FIXTURIife There will be no outstanding attraction in the Rugby football game ailable lor Gisborne for June 4, on which date the King’s Birthday holiday will be celebrated. The Wanoa sub-union, with which the Poverty Bay union s management committee opened up negotiations some weeks ago, has made an arrangement with tiie Rotorua union for that dale, and so far as can ho ascottaiueil it is impossible to arrange loi a match with either the East Coast ot the Bay of Plenty unions.

The position was discussed at a meeting of the management committee fast evening, when there were present Messit, G. it. Sceat.s, chairman, E. 1- Brosnahan, J. Young, P. C. Edmondson, \V. V. i'icsse, P. i'ureiu, O. S. Burt, G. J. Jeuuc, A. Tennn, and W. iS. McKee, lion, secretary. A letter was placed before the committee from the Wairoa sub-union intimating that owing to that body having completed an arrangement with the Rotorua, union for a. match at Wairoa on June 4, it would not be possible, to meet Poverty Bay on that date at Gisborne. In connection with this JotLci. the secretary stated that he had taken ui) the possibility of securing a- visit from a Bay of Plenty team, but also had been disappointed in that direction, the Bay of Plenty reply to his inquiry being as follows: “I*inances will not permit visit this year. We are endeavoring to build up funds to tour next season, when we hope to visit you. ’ .Both communications were formaLv received, after which the management committee discussed possible alternatives to a blank holiday. It was finally determined to arrange a special possibles-probables match, the teams to lie selected from the whole of the union area, including the localities administered by the sub-unions. J his match should be of considerable interest, as it will have a direct bearing upon the selection of players to undertake the forthcoming tour to the Waikato. Thames Valley and Hay of Plenty. PROSPECTS OF THE TOUR. Regarding the prospects of the tour, previously decided upon, a letter was received from the Waikato Rugby Union, stating that the date proposed to be allotted to Hamilton, namely, July 28, would not lie a very suitable one. The letter added that there was little chance of the "Waikato union making a return visit to Poverty Hay during the season. A further communication from the Thames Valley union was in a much more optimistic stiuin, and contained an offer to billet the Poverty Bay team for three days at Te Arolm. A brief discussion took place upon the letters, ami it was agreed that the Waikato union bo asked to accept August 4 as the date for the Hamilton fixture; and that the Thames Valley union be asked to select its own date between July £8 and August 4, leaving a reasonable margin between fixtures. TRAINING FACILITIES Training facilities for club and representative. teams were discussed briefly, the chairman stating that arrangements had been finalised for the use of too hockey ground at the Childers road reserve tor flight training under floodlights on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Should weather conditions be unsuitable on a Tuesday night in any week, the grounds would be available on the Wednesday, lie added. Dressing accommodation had been made available by the goodwill of tho Amateur Athletic Club. Delegates received the information with satisfaction. Minor matters dealt with included a suggestion that seating for ladies be provided inside the railing on the side of No. 1 ground at the Uv.nl, opposite the grandstand, this suggestion being held over for later consideration; a request for assistance in the provision of a football for Kornnga Valley School, this inquiry being referred to the Primary Schools’ Sports Association; and tho acceptance hv the Y.M.P. delegate. Mr. P. Tureia, of an invitation from the Mangatu club to tho senior team having the bvc in the championship series on May 26.
